To help become lucid in a dream, its good to develop a habit of "reality checking".
What is a reality check?
A Reality Check is simply determining whether or not you are in a dream.
Here is a list of several reality checks you could use throughout the day. Please note, reality checks don't always work. That's why I recommend doing a couple different reality checks each time.
1. Am I Dreaming?
Get into the habit of asking yourself this throughout the day. Upon asking yourself "Am I dreaming?", take a moment to observe your surroundings and determine if you are in a dream-like state. Try to recollect the events in your day, in reverse order, from the present moment until the time you woke up. If you determine you are not dreaming, then imagine what it would be like if you were.
2. Reading.
Many times in dreams, text is not constant. Try reading something, look away, then look back and read it again. If it changed, its a good sign you're dreaming. Try this with watches too. Is time constant? Check the clock a couple times to see.
3. Light Switch.
Sometimes in a dream, light switches are non-functional. Try flipping one on and off and see if it works.
4. Mirror.
Look at yourself in a mirror. Oftentimes, your reflection will be distorted. A word of caution, if you are easily frightened, do not try this method. Seeing your reflection turn into a deformed beast-like creature could induce nightmares. It depends on the person how you see your reflection.
5. Solidity.
My personal favorite, and also a discreet method. Try poking your finger through your palm. If it goes through, you're dreaming.
6. Hands.
This method is from Carlos Casteneda's books. Look at your hands. Oftentimes, this alone is enough to induce lucid dreaming.
7. I can fly!
Try jumping off the ground in an attempt to fly. (Make sure no one is watching).
These are just a few of possibly hundreds of reality checks. You can even come up with your own. Try a few and see what works for you.
